When I met with Mark and Robert back in March to discuss photographing their upcoming nuptials, I was really excited. With same-sex marriage finally legalized in DC, I was eager to be a part of the celebration. So this past Saturday, I joined Mark and Robert, along with family and friends, at DC’s Long View Gallery, where the couple walked town the aisle with dog Cooper, and tied the knot. Wedding planner Alex Pare of “Cherry Blossom Weddings & Events” helped make the wedding and reception shine (check out the decadent cake and desserts!) and DJ Jaime Mizzel Easson kept the beats going all night. Special thanks to John Frank of John Frank Photography for second shooting the wedding with me. Congrats to Mark and Robert!!

I met Kaitlyn and Josh through a mutual friend, and I had a blast photographing their wedding on Friday. From the first time I met them at my studio, we totally clicked and I knew that their wedding day was going to be so much fun. With their 14 person wedding party in tow, we stormed the city for a pre-ceremony photo shoot before heading to the ceremony at Foundry United Methodist Church. Then we headed to Sequoia for a beautiful reception, where DJ Michael Stiltz spun some jams all night.

Whether it’s at a reception or even for on-location portraiture, I love using the new Flex TT5 and MiniTT1 wireless transmitters and transceivers from PocketWizard. Not only do they give me wireless freedom from pesky sync cables, but also gives me the capability of using full TTL capabilities at distances that would be impossible using the built in IR capabilities of my speedlites. I don’t have to worry about the sun or other artificial light sources interfering with the communication between my flashes. Anyone who knows me and my shooting style knows I don’t like to waste time on location dealing with the gear; I like to shoot fast, fast, fast and never exhaust my models (or usually real couples) with posing for too long. With the PocketWizards I’m able to move quickly from one location to another with minimal tear down and setup. I love the fact that the shoe mount allows me to bypass the need for even a PC sync cable to have my flashes work consistently in all environments I might shoot in.
This ability to use TTL metering for my speedlites allows me to shoot in Av Mode (aperture priority) and have the flash automatically balance the power of the light so I can focus on my subject and composition and let my camera system do the heavy lifting. This allows me to focus on my creativity rather than constantly running back and forth between my remote light and tweaking the power manually.
